The items on this picture were taken from water heaters in operation in the San Antonio, Texas area. They had all been in service between 7 and 12 years.
      The electric element, (bottom center), was open (burned out). The greater the amount of calcium buildup, the longer the element was activated in trying to heat the water.
      The large piece of calcium, (upper right), has an accumulation consisting of calcium, lime, sand, and other particles. It is 4 inches thick and 9 inches long and developed in layers, resembling something of a stalagmite.
      The top center is a unit which controls the gas and temperature. The small amount of buildup on the sensing probe could even have caused an inaccurate reading.
      The Safety valve, (center), revealed a substantial amount of buildup which may represent a safety hazard in that the safety probe may be less functional.
      The operating expense of an inefficient water heater may cost the consumer still more while decreasing the amount of sufficiently heated water. Considering the size of the two pieces of calcium, (center, upper left, 10 inches long), this homeowner may well have been paying a fortune in heating cost!
      Prevent potentially costly and dangerous situations.
